Most people, especially anyone outside Chicago, are only familiar with GLC as a member of Kanye West's G.O.O.D Music family, since he's featured on West tracks like "Spaceship" and "Drive Slow." But GLC is stepping out, making a name for himself with his debut album, Love, Life & Loyalty, which dropped Tuesday (October 12), and he's glad fans will have a chance to hear what he has to say.
"A lot of people may have thought that my album was going to be centered around Kanye. It was going to be 'Kanye, Kanye, Kanye,' but I am an entity within myself, and I am the Ism, so I have to spread my ism."
GLC said that he's grateful to have been in the game for quite some time, but people will learn more about him through his solo album, which he said is filled with stories of growth and development. "Pull Me Back," a number about avoiding past mistakes, landed online Tuesday.
"We all have to grow from point A in order to get to point B, and the day that you stop learning is the day that you die," he told MTV News. "I learn something new every day, and I'm constantly in the pursuit of growth. I'm constantly in the pursuit of bettering myself and bettering those that are around me."
The album features a diverse cast of characters, from Bun B and Sir Mix-a-Lot to fellow G.O.O.D. family members Kid Cudi and John Legend. He even had Manfred Mann redo his band's version of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light." And, of course, West makes an appearance on the song "Flight School." That song leaked a couple of years back featuring West and T-Pain, but it's actually a song GLC played for West.
"He was like, 'Yo, I want to get on this.' And he took the sample out and reproduced the beat and had T-Pain sing the hook," GLC recalled. "And now we have 'Flight School.' "
